I actually know a canadian company claiming to use aerosols to solve the problem of global warming locally.

I know its been a pretty long time since this post, but I don't know if a list of existing aerosol facilities around the world can be of use somehow. Hi, you might be interested to know that some atmospheric toxin or combination of toxins is killing vegetation at an accelerating rate on the East Coast of the US and quite possibly elsewhere. Cumulative ozone has been detrimental for decades but the last couple of years the cascade of damage to trees is frightful. Annual and aquatic foliage also showed symptoms of atmospheric poisoning this summer.

I suspect the recent surge in damage is due to massive quantities of nitrogen-based fertilizer for growing corn for ethanol, and/or ethanol emissions. Interesting. I was of the opinion that in order for something to be an aerosol it had to have been "aerosolized" as opposed to just evaporated - in other words artificially created i.e. by a mist sprayer.

Thanks Dominik bringing this to our notice. Chan and Yao show NO2 trend in Figure 4 for Beijing, Figure 6 for Shanghai and Figure 7 for Pearl delta river. Data in the figures are from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen Environmental Bulletin. I suppose the data from ground-based observations are shown. Either decreasing or constant trend for NO2 between 1996 and 2005 is apparent in all the figures.

Richter et al. (Nature, 2005) and Van der A et al. (JGR, 2006) report trend using satellite data.

It is indeed interesting and important to know what is reason for such a big discrepancy between satellite and ground-based observations?

The sentence "NO2 and CO concentrations have not increased due to effective control measures" has caught my attention since satellite observations are telling a completely different story. E.g. Richter et al. (Nature, 2005) reported on a 50% increase in NO2 over industrialized regions in China between 1996 and 2005. Van der A et al. (JGR, 2006)even reported an incredible 20% increase per year for the city of Shanghai.

Thats a good observation Harish! I think this is the interesting part of this paper. There are couple of other regions besides Australia (discussed in paper) that have low AOT values but comparable forcing values and vice-a-versa. In Australia, it is the background/surface that plays a role besides aerosol concentration. The results from this paper agree with the various factors affecting the aerosol radiative forcing such as aerosol concentration, surface conditions, aerosol distribution, aerosol type etc. A combination of these is what we are seeing in the annual globally averaged map.

Indeed an interesting article. Radiative forcing by aerosol is one of the largest source of uncertainty in climate models. Being able to estimate using satellite based observations is big step forward.

I am very much surprised to see that Australia have quite low aerosol optical depth compare to India, still they have comparable radiative forcing (Fig.1 original article).
